Icon Details
Saint Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan and, as a child, was taken from her family and sold into slavery, suffering great cruelty and loss. Later brought to Italy, she encountered the Christian faith and came to know God as one who had been with her even in her suffering. After gaining her freedom, she became a Canossian Sister, living a quiet life marked by humility, kindness, and deep trust in God. Her holiness is found not in dramatic actions, but in the gentle transformation of a life healed by grace and rooted in forgiveness and hope.

This icon was created as a special commission for St. Luke's Episcopal Church in San Diego, CA in 2024. The details of the sun and moon were inspired by Sudanese textiles, the chain around her neck by Sudanese beadwork. I will be simplifying the design slightly to fit an 8x10" board.
