Icon Details

St. Joan of Arc was born in 15th-century France. As a young woman she was guided by a profound sense of divine calling, and led French forces during the final phase of the Hundred Years’ War. At just seventeen, she helped lift the siege of Orléans and inspired the coronation of King Charles VII. Yet her life was cut short when she was captured, tried, and executed at nineteen on grounds of heresy. The verdict of her case was overturned a few years after her death, and she has since been hailed as a symbol of freedom and independence as well as the national symbol of France. Canonized in 1920, she is remembered not only for her courage but for her unwavering fidelity to God’s voice amid fear and opposition. In our own time, her witness continues to speak to the quiet courage required to live truthfully, reminding us that holiness is often birthed through deep listening and bold action, even when the path is costly.

This icon is based on a 19th C. painting in 15th C. miniaturist style (pictured, original in the public domain). I painted it a number of years ago and will be reformatting it to fit an 8x10 panel but will otherwise preserve the original design.
