Original 6th C. icon of Christ, painted in encaustic wax.
Icon Details
One of the oldest surviving icons of Christ, the 6th-century Pantocrator from St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai is a powerful image of divine mystery and presence. In this icon, Christ is portrayed with a striking asymmetry—his right hand raised in blessing, his left holding the Gospel. One eye is gentle, full of mercy; the other, more penetrating, reflecting judgment and truth. This duality reveals the fullness of Christ’s nature: fully human, fully divine—merciful Savior and righteous Judge.

Writing this icon is more than a technical exercise—it is a sacred encounter with the face of Christ. As we prayerfully trace each line and layer of color, we are invited to draw closer to Him, to see with new eyes, and to be seen. Whether you are new to iconography or continuing a long practice, this retreat offers space for reverence, reflection, and transformation.
