Workshop Details

6 sessions conducted live on Zoom (30+ hours of instruction).
Step-by-step instruction will guide every part of the icon writing process.
Daily morning prayer, curated for this icon, will enrich the spiritual experience.
Supply package will be mailed 1-2 weeks in advance of the retreat via USPS Priority Mail.
Supply package includes an 8x12" gessoed wooden panel, 5 sheets of gold leaf & instructional packet.
SPECIAL NOTE ON GOLD LEAF (UPDATED): In the standard kit you will receive 5 sheets of "economic" gold leaf (still 23ct but slightly lighter weight), which is enough to do the rough technique pictured above. If you would prefer to receive the Italian gold we normally use, please email me. In this case the standard kit will include 2 sheets, which is enough to do the halos and details. Prices are equivalent. If you prefer additional Italian gold for the background, you may purchase 3 additional sheets of Italian gold leaf here.
Each session is recorded and made available immediately after class.
Access to recordings, progression photos and other resources will be housed on Google Classroom. This does require a Google account. Access will never expire.
For those opting for online access only, you will need to supply your own board and gold. You will be emailed pdf files of all instructional material which you can print from home prior to the start of the retreat.
First-time students have the option to purchase an Introductory Kit for $12 (highly recommended, add this before checkout to avoid extra shipping costs). See Essential Supplies for more details.

Icon Details

The Salus Populi Romani is one of the most revered icons of the Virgin Mary, housed in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. It is amongst the oldest icons that survive, dating from the 6th century, though tradition holds that it was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. The title means “Salvation of the Roman People,” reflecting Mary’s role as intercessor and protector. It is an image that proliferated around the globe and for centuries Christians from all backgrounds have turned to it in prayer during times of plague, war, and need. In recent years, the icon has received greater attention through the devotion of Pope Francis as well as a major restoration in 2018.
