Icon Details

In the icon of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we are invited into the mystery of a love that is pure, sorrowful, and steadfast. Her heart is shown aflame—symbolizing burning love for God and for humanity—pierced by a sword, recalling Simeon’s prophecy: “And a sword will pierce your own soul also” (Luke 2:35). This speaks to her deep suffering as the Mother of Christ. The surrounding roses or lilies evoke her purity and maternal tenderness. Her expression is often one of serene compassion, drawing the viewer into contemplation of her interior life—marked by obedience, silence, and unwavering faith.

This icon is more than a devotional image—it is a theological affirmation of Mary’s role in salvation history. Through it, we are invited to meditate on a heart wholly united to God. During this retreat, we will prayerfully engage with these symbols through the ancient practice of icon writing—entering into silence and sacred rhythm as we reflect on Mary’s “yes” and the invitation to offer our own.
