Icon Details
Mexican retablos of the 19th century are small devotional paintings, most often created on tin, that reflect the vibrant popular faith of the people. Unlike large church altarpieces, these intimate works were made for private homes, serving as personal expressions of devotion to Christ, the Virgin Mary, or the saints. They often portray beloved holy figures in bold, folk-art style, emphasizing accessibility over refinement, and sometimes include narrative “ex-votos” giving thanks for divine help in daily life. Retablos are significant because they reveal the blending of Catholic tradition with local artistry, offering a window into the lived spirituality and cultural identity of 19th-century Mexico.

The retablo of Ecce Homo gently draws us into the stillness of Christ’s vulnerable presence. Painting this image will invite an honest, unguarded attention that will soften our hearts and prepare them for repentance, compassion, and the quiet work of Lent.
