Icon Details

The Cuzco School of iconography developed in colonial Peru after the Spanish conquest, emerging from the encounter between European Christian imagery and Indigenous Andean visual culture. Shaped by local materials and devotional life, it formed a distinctive sacred art with flattened space and rich ornament. Rather than imitating European models, the Cuzco tradition reinterpreted them to communicate Christian mystery through a uniquely Andean vision. This will be yet another opportunity to grow in our appreciation of how Christian iconography developed around the world.
