Workshop Details

The Child of Atocha, or Niño de Atocha, is a popular depiction of the Christ Child in Spanish and Latin American Catholic traditions. He is often shown as a young boy, dressed as a pilgrim, carrying a basket of bread and a staff with a gourd, symbolizing care for those in need. This image has roots in devotion to the child Jesus and is particularly associated with protection and miraculous interventions for travelers, prisoners, and the sick.
While the Child of Atocha is not exclusively a Christmas figure, his representation as the Christ Child ties him symbolically to the Christmas season, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. During Christmas, this image can evoke the humility and innocence of the Christ Child, aligning with the themes of God's incarnation as a vulnerable infant, as well as Jesus' care for the poor and needy.
